How important are time management skills?

We all have the same number of hours in a day yet we find very few people flourishing and succeeding in their daily activities while others sit there complaining that they could not do this or that because of lack of time. Have you ever wondered, why? Why is it that few find 24 hours of a day, more than enough while others find themselves running out of time?

Time management

Yes, time management is the only way to find a way out of your solutions.

With the world running so fast, we all must learn the art of mastering time management.

Honesty first,

Well, I was someone who always ran short of time and that’s the reason why I worked hard to schedule my day in a way where I could have a productive day without pressuring myself.  So today I will be sharing with you some basic rules of time management which have helped me to work with more productivity and ease.

Know your priorities

It’s very important to know what is more important for you? Which tasks have to be done first.  You can’t juggle between ten things and excel at all of them.

Try and start your day with the most important things. For example, for me, it’s very important to write. So, I make sure that I write something before the day starts for my kids. (well, I certainly don’t mean that my kids are not my priority! I am talking about work here.)

Once I started working on my writing, the first thing in the morning, I could see a lot of difference in my routine and emotions too.

The woman in me, who felt puzzled and confused earlier, felt at so much ease after prioritizing my goals.

So, it doesn’t matter what the priority is for you, personal or official. Try and work on your priority first thing in the morning. So that your brain feels relaxed. And you don’t feel tense for the rest of the day.

Write your goals for the day

I write my goals for the day, a night before. (In this tech-savvy world, I prefer to write my goals in my diary. It somehow works better for me. You must try it too.)

Once I write what my goals are, it gives me a clearer picture of what my day would look like. I also try to schedule my goals in a time frame. This works beneficially for me, my team, and my family too.

This way my kids know that I am working in the morning and they have to manage their classes on their own and my team knows that my evenings are dedicated to my kids and I won’t answer any calls. (Unless it’s very important.)

Minimize distractions in your daily life.

Well, as I say, if the distraction is distracting you, it’s doing its job but you are not!!

The best part of distractions is that we find them so entertaining. Gossip, friends, movies, or maybe the weather. We, humans, get distracted very easily. So, while working make sure nothing distracts you.

Shut the door, sit in your room and promise yourself to move only after completing your work. Give yourself goals!

Earlier I could sit there on the couch and consume social media all day long. Seriously, time practically flies when you are consuming social media. Someone’s cooking, someone’s dancing, and some show amazing magic. who doesn’t like it!? But I make it a point that I am not consuming any content on social media during my working h s unless it is beneficial for me.

Don’t multitask

This is one important thing to understand. A mistake which I often made initially, and failed at it. Multitasking can be confusing and also ends up consuming a lot more time. I tried to be active on different social media platforms and created different kinds of content for all, but obviously, that didn’t work for me because I could not do justice to any kind of content.

You cannot cook while you soothe a crying baby but you can soothe the baby and then cook your meal. Right!?

The studies have confirmed that multitasking is normally less efficient than single-tasking. The brain needs time to adjust when navigating different tasks. Switching tasks makes you tired and unproductive.

You can batch similar tasks that call for a similar mindset.

Take regular breaks

Have you ever wondered why in offices we get coffee breaks? Our manager wants us to work our ass off, but why do most stern bosses also give short breaks.

It’s scientifically proven that for our brain to work effectively, we need regular breaks. Continuously working on one thing can make your brain tired and you end up feeling low on energy. The small intervals of breaks are necessary for your success.

This has happened with me so many times, I sit there for hours wondering what next, how to make the presentation? But no. Nothing creative happens after I pressurize myself.

Once I go out for a walk, play a little with my kids, and come back and look at my work with a fresh mindset, I easily solve my tasks which earlier seemed impossible.

When your kid can’t solve that math question, let him take a break.

Introduce the mantra of time management in your life and in your family’s life too. Feel the difference and share your experiences.

  9. We all do love to complain, don’t we? Especially about how we don’t have enough time to do all that we want to accomplish. I use a method called Time-boxing (have written a detailed post about it on my blog) and I find that it really helps. Prioritizing of course is the key to getting things done. Great tips, Aakriti!
