Coaching is a process that focuses on making an individual do the best they can according to their potential. It is a journey through which a coach can guide his/her client towards a fulfilled tomorrow.
Coaching does not focus on sympathizing with your client. It is about knowing where your client is in the present situation and how they feel about it. And then with a better understanding of the present situation of a client, a coach can guide the client to reach their goals.
How do you explain coaching in simple words?
Coaching in simpler words is a journey that leads to self-discovery, self-acknowledgment, and self-fulfillment.
But it is also important to understand here that coaching is not magic and it does not have medicinal powers.
As a popular saying suggests, you can take a horse to water but you cannot make a horse drink water.
Similarly, Coaching is a process that is only successful if the client is willing to take the required actions.
What is an example of coaching?
With the diversity of life, coaches are also skilled in different fields of life. From sports coaches to relationship coaches anyone and everyone needs to go to a coach. A coach helps in a better understanding of situations in life.
For example, if you feel you can’t decide which course to choose? What area of the profession should you specialize in?
You can consult a career coach and take the best possible career advice. And if you think you are facing anxiety pangs, and nothing seems to be going right in your life. In such cases, you need to consult a life coach. A life coach will guide you to understand where the problem actually lies. A coach can help you to look at your life from a completely different angle.
What are the three A’s of coaching?
Coaching doesn’t come with a checklist of questions to understand the client and his situation better. It is dependent on the ability of the coach to understand the client. And then guide the client in the best possible way.
But all forms of coaching come with the basic pattern that involves the three A’s, which means:
Ask before advocating: Before starting any kind of coaching do ask your client if he needs your help or not. If the client is okay if you ask some personal questions or not.
Actively listen: listen to the client with open ears and mind. There are cases where the client just comes to a coach because he just wants to be heard. So make sure you listen to your client, not to jump on to conclusions but to understand your client.
Assume best intentions: There can be cases where the client comes and shares their mistakes, and how they have been wrong in the past. As a coach, it is necessary to understand the client’s best intentions behind everything, without jumping to conclusions.
Who needs a coach?
You, I, and everyone around needs coaching at some of the other points of life.
If you are going through a situation where you are confused about the right choices to be made. Or if you are feeling anxious, sad, or depressed. A good life coach can guide you to feel better by taking appropriate actions.
Just like a dentist fixes your tooth, a coach fixes your life. It is necessary for you to understand that visiting a coach doesn’t mean that you have a mental disorder.
Consider visiting a coach as visiting a good friend. A friend who is willing to hear you and understand you without any biases.
What are the different types of coaching ?
There are different coaches that have expertise in different areas of life. From Relationship coaches to targeted behavioral coaches, legacy coaches, succession coaches. The diversity of coaches in the different fields goes on and on.
Here, I would like to share different types of coaches and what they expertise in.
Business Coaching:
Business coaches provide coaching to individuals or groups, a better understanding of the logical choices that can be made for better results.
One on One coaching for executives:
Coaches from outside the organization are requested to provide coaching for a fixed duration to executives to improve skills and performances. Executive coaches help in the preparation of advancement in business through tactics and relevant logical thinking.

Personal/ Life Coaching:
A life coach helps an individual to understand their own feelings and thoughts. A life coach helps the client to prioritize themselves and bring the required change to reach their goals. Just like a fitness coach takes care of your body, a life coach takes care of your life.
Group Coaching:
While in group coaching, coaches work with the group but focus on every individual. Group coaching is a unique way where individuals learn from each other. Communicating plays a big role here because everyone shares their experiences and perspectives. Group coaching can be about team building, stress management, and career development too.
Relationship Coaching:
Every relationship requires coaching. There are times when you are trapped in a toxic relationship. But you fail to understand how to come out of it. There are relationships where you are in love but you fail to understand why you can’t understand your partner. Relationship with your parents, spouse, children, or friends. Any relationship can go through a rough patch. We humans always tend to concentrate and look at everything from our perspective. A relationship coach can guide you to understand each other’s feelings. And can improve the relationship by helping you to look at the situation from a different angle.
Career coaching:
Career coaching is provided in many schools and colleges. It helps the candidates to choose the most appropriate field of profession for him/herself. Coaches understand the capabilities and goals of candidates. And then, Career coaches guide the client to take proper actions.
Presentation/communication skills coaching:
There are times when we want to say something but we lack the correct presentation to express ourselves. A communication/presentation skills coach helps us to overcome our fears and anxieties. And helps us to show the world who we are and what we really want.
What is the purpose of coaching?
The main purpose of coaching is to help the client in the best possible way. And the purpose can come into effect by:
- Having a genuine interest in people. (You can’t coach if you don’t care.)
- Asking relevant questions that help the client to know and understand themselves better.
- Knowing and understanding your client’s potential.
- Guiding the client to take necessary actions to reach their desired goals.
Conclusion: Coaching is a way to make life simpler. It makes us feel fulfilled by doing what our heart wants.
